Big news out of the IHL this week, as the Muskegon Lumberjacks have announced that they'll be moving from the IHL (Class AA pro) to the USHL (Tier I junior) next season. As a result, the discussion about the long-term health of the IHL has ramped up once again - and it's spurring talk about the IceMen possibly moving up to the IHL for the 2010-2011 season, a year earlier than originally expected. In fact, the IHL President has said it's 60-40 that Evansville will be in the "I" next year.
Of course, the Courier & Press hasn't even sniffed this story. Thankfully for those of us who want to know what the heck is going on, the Fort Wayne media actually pays attention to hockey...
News-Sentinel: Muskegon jumping from IHL
News-Sentinel: Lumperjacks couldn't wait
News-Sentinel: What's ahead for Komets and IHL?
Journal-Gazette: Evansville a possibility for next season
If it were to happen, the team would likely have to strike an agreement with Swonder to add extra seating on the skate park side of the ice. We would then play at Swonder for a year, then turn our attention to the new arena. Keep in mind, however, that we're still no lock to be the new arena's hockey tenant, so that's not a done deal going forward even if we do move up a year early.
Definitely a developing story...
